Today, Mary and I had the privilege of giving a presentation at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the ISACA National Capital Area Chapter in Rosslyn, Virginia. Our talk focused on five leadership strategies for connecting and building a relationship with people. Leaders who make a connection and build relationships with people foster employee engagement and commitment. Employee engagement and commitment in turn drive productivity and results in organizations.
In our talk, we stress that leadership opportunities, both formal and informal, exist at all levels of a career as well as in our personal lives. In discussing the importance of making a connection, we explore underlying fundamental competencies such as authenticity, courtesy, respect, and continuous improvement. We also discuss why it is important for leaders to be consciously aware of and intentional about applying these basic leadership fundamentals.
We have written about several of the strategies in previous blog postings. Below you can download an outline of these five strategies. The file also contains a list of references for further reading. For your convenience, we included links to where you can purchase these books from Amazon. We are not being paid to advertise or refer you to these resources—we just think they offer a lot of great material!
We welcome your comments and perspectives on these strategies as well as other strategies that you believe are crucial in the leader making a connection a reality.
