Today, Mary and I had the privilege of giving a presentation at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the ISACA National Capital Area Chapter in Rosslyn, Virginia.  Our talk focused on five leadership strategies for connecting and building a relationship with people.  Leaders who make a connection and build relationships with people foster employee engagement and commitment.  Employee engagement and commitment in turn drive productivity and results in organizations.

In our talk, we stress that leadership opportunities, both formal and informal, exist at all levels of a career as well as in our personal lives.  In discussing the importance of making a connection, we explore underlying fundamental competencies such as authenticity, courtesy, respect, and continuous improvement.  We also discuss why it is important for leaders to be consciously aware of and intentional about applying these basic leadership fundamentals.

We have written about several of the strategies in previous blog postings.  Below you can download an outline of these five strategies.  The file also contains a list of references for further reading.  For your convenience, we included links to where you can purchase these books from Amazon.  We are not being paid to advertise or refer you to these resources—we just think they offer a lot of great material!

We welcome your comments and perspectives on these strategies as well as other strategies that you believe are crucial in the leader making a connection a reality.

Let me just say that these 5 points are ESSENTIAL for superior leadership in business and for smooth relationships in LIFE. Rarely does one come across a site, such as Keith's and Mary's, that contains gems of wisdom, practical strategies, concise thinking and just plain good common sense and courtesy! It's all here folks and very easy to comprehend and "take with you" in your leadership journey. In other words, I LOVE this leadership site!

When I first began my graphic arts business, I read every book I could find in the library (pre-Google/Net days) and then some, offering good business strategies and plans for dealing with my clients.

The intelligent advice offered at RK West distills virtually all the books I read on the subject of effective leadership and the newer ones that have been published since. But more importantly, this page showcases PERSONAL and VALUABLE experience that both Keith and Mary have applied in their careers; it is real life application plus book knowledge. You cannot find better resources anywhere.

All five Leadership Strategies are vital but this one is my personal favorite: "Sweat the small stuff. 'Small stuff' doesn’t mean things that are insignificant or unimportant, but actions that are basic and fundamental, and often overlooked." Amen! :)

Keep up the first-rate posts, folks. I enjoy reading the comments too.
